What is Stoke?
Since it's origins in the 60s and 70s this slang has become a staple in surf culture's vocabulary.
As with other slangs, this word can have many meanings and uses depending on who you ask.
To me this word is similar to excitement, energy and ultimate happiness. Stoke combines all that and more. That is the beauty of slang.
One my my favorite definitions is: "Stoke is getting pounded on the head all day, but you keep going back for one more ride."
And that one ride can make your session, day, week, month and even year.
It's hard to describe the feeling of spotting a wave, chasing it down, positioning yourself in the perfect spot, paddling like butter, gliding to your feet, speed down the line, bottom turn, whack the lip, cut back towards white water and keep pumping down the line until the reform inside.
Yeah all that, hard to sum up. So how was that wave? It was epic I'm stoked.
Or I got the stoke from that wave, so I can deal with taking 10 waves on the head just to get one more of those.
When your buddy asks you: Are you surfing today, it's so cold and windy? you say, yeah man I'm stoked!
It's a fun word and a great use of the English language if you ask me. More ways to express yourself.
Surfing is more than just an activity or a sport. It's a lifestyle and state of mind. We will be exploring more on surf philosophy in our blog stay stoked tuned!
